  3. “Flood Control?” • Special District Organized under Title 48 of the Arizona Revised Statutes • Established in Yavapai County in the late 80s. • Local Administrators of the National Flood Insurance Program. • Building Permit Review • Small Projects Branch • Flood Warning System

  4. What Can We Do? • Identify Flood Risk • Communicate the Risk • Reduce the Risk

  5. Flood Risk • Why Do I Say “Flood Risk?” • Everyone Lives in a Flood Zone • Floods; the most common natural disaster in the US • Floods; the #1 weather related killer in the US • 25% of flood insurance claims come from “Low to Moderate” risk areas although flood insurance coverage in these areas averages only 1% • The fact that a flood hasn't occurred in recent years does not mean that one hasn't happened in the past or that one will not happen in the future

  6. Conditions for Changing a FIRM • Construction in the floodplain • Significant development upstream • A flood occurs outside FIRM boundaries • A major flood control project • Changes in topography

  7. Flood Insurance Information • You don’t have to be in a floodplain to purchase flood insurance. • You don’t need to have a Federally secured mortgage to purchase insurance • 90% of homes flooded annually are not in a FEMA designated hazard area. • Go To: www.floodsmart.gov for more information on flood insurance
