  3. Henkes creates picture books that end with some conflict being happily resolved. • He had a genuine sense of children's feelings, which translated into his writing. Writing

  4. Henkes's first book, All Alone, was written during his freshman year in college • He took his portfolio to New York. Within days he had his first book contract, a sign of both his talent and the vision of Greenwillow's editor-in-chief, Susan Hirschman, who has published all of his books to date. First Book

  5. Chrysanthemumwas inspired by a remembered feeling, although the incident in the book is not the same one that originally provoked the feeling.   8. Activities: • Stop reading the book right before the solution to Owens problem. Recall Owen's feelings about giving up his favorite blanket when its time to start school and discuss the things that are hard for students to leave behind at school time. Then brainstorm possible solutions to Owens' problem. List those ideas on the board. If time allows, have the students draw/write their solution on paper to present to the class. Then finish reading the book. Book: "Owen"
