23. Lessons Learned from the 2013 Pilot Test

Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing • Frustration with lack of word processor type functionality • Issues with “scrolling,” “dragging,” and “dropping” on computers without mouse • Manipulation of media - - pause & rewind - - was challenging for some • Variables between small screen vs. large screen displays • Small screen requires more scrolling to reveal content

25. Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing • Adjusting volume on headsets required users to exit the test • Students definitely need more time in writing a long response without teacher guidance • Wish we would get results

26. Lessons Learned From Pilot Testing • Test proctors lacked necessary technical skills • Inadequate technical support staff to cover multiple locations within one district • Not reasonable to think the classroom teacher can manage the SBAC alone

31. Capacity Check • Wednesday, March 5 (recommended date for elementary sites) or • Friday, March 7 (recommended date for middle school sites ) or • Monday, March 10 (recommended date for high school sites).

Capacity Check • Gear-up for the Spring Field Test • All schools to participate • ELA and/or math on one or more of the March dates • Students spend a minimum of 30 minutes in the SBAC practice test environment • Students and staff participate in a feedback/reflection activity • Connectivity and device capacity

Capacity Check • Students and staff will gain familiarity with the testing environments, • Teachers will analyze the Depth of Knowledge levels of test items and prepare for field test logistical challenges, and • Administration (site and district) will identify gaps in technology, logistical concerns, and staff development needs. • Intended to “stress” the technology capacity of our system

34. SBAC Practice Tests • Capacity Check should not be the first or the last time students and staff are in the Practice Test environment. • It is strongly encouraged for students to take both sections of the practice tests, for each content area prior to spring field test.

Beginning a Practice Test • Step 1: Select a Grade Level • Select a grade level from the “Grade” drop-down list. • Select [Yes] to continue. • Step 2: Select a Practice Test • Select the name of the practice test you want to take and continue to the next step. • If you want to access tests from another grade, select [Back to login].

36. Login through Secure or Non-Secure Browser • Close all running applications on your device. • Open the secure browser. • Select the link that takes you to the practice test. • Make sure the checkboxes next to “Guest User” and “Guest Session” are checked. • Select [Sign In].

Basic Practice Test Rules • Students cannot skip test items. • Students must answer all test items on a page before going to the next page. • Some pages contain multiple items, so students may need to use the vertical scroll bar to view all items on a page. • Students may mark items for review and use the “Question” drop-down list at the top of the page to easily return to those items.

39. Practice Test Tools • The following tools are available for all practice tests: • Highlight text • Zoom • Mark items for review • Make notes • View tutorials • Strikethrough • Access to the Test Instructions and Help

Practice Test Tools Calculator Tool: • Students have access to calculators for mathematics assessments: • Basic Calculator: grades 6 • Scientific Calculator: grade 7 & 8 • Graphing, Regression, and Scientific Calculators: grade 11 • Note: The calculator appears only in a segment of the mathematics practice tests.

41. Practice Test Tools Stimulus Expansion Tool: • Students can expand the stimulus section so that it takes up a larger portion of the screen.

42. Practice Test Tools Text-to-Speech (TTS) and Speak Tool: • TTS can only be used through the secure browser. • Students must use headphones. • Headphones with built-in volume control are recommended. • Students can listen to math stimuli and/or test items and answer options. • Reminder: TTS settings should be tested and verified as working properly before students begin their tests.
