  1. News and MiscellaneousUPO May 17 2013Didier Contardo, Jeff Spalding Phase 2 Scope and Cost exercise

  2. Overall Upgrade Branches and Options considered for phase 2 New Tracker (silicon and pixels) L1 Trigger Upgrade Endcap/Forward Calorimeters Muons Complete 1.6<eta<2.4 with GEM/GRPC New EE and HE - new absorber - extend eta range New EE Track-Trigger EE/EB FE 10µs 500kHz • Extend HE longevity: similar or new active elements • same absorber • - can increase granularity Barrel+ EndCap Long Barrel CSC DCFBB20µs 500kHz Extend pixel eta range is an option DT ROB/ROS 20µs 1MHz Extending muon eta range is an option Push/Pull Track Trigger Retrofit HF New HF Precision timing added to new calorimetry is an option under consideration, depends on studies and R&D

  3. Scenario 0 and options: No increase in L1 rate and latency New Tracker (silicon and pixels) L1 Trigger Upgrade Endcap/Forward Calorimeters Muons Complete 1.6<eta<2.4 with GEM/GRPC New EE and HE - new absorber - extend eta range New EE Track-Trigger • Extend HE longevity: similar or new active elements • same absorber • - can increase granularity Barrel+ EndCap Long Barrel Extend pixel eta range is an option Extending muon eta range is an option Push Track Trigger Retrofit HF New HF Precision timing added to new calorimetry is an option under consideration, depends on studies and R&D • Concerns: • Trigger entirely dependent on Track Trigger (is this enough?) • FE electronics must operate past 2035 • Need to demonstrate Track trigger < 6.4 µs - all forward detector options

  4. Scenario 1 and options: Increase L1 Rate and latency New Tracker (silicon and pixels) L1 Trigger Upgrade Endcap/Forward Calorimeters Muons Complete 1.6<eta<2.4 with GEM/GRPC New EE Track-Trigger EE/EB FE 10µs 500kHz • Extend HE longevity: similar or new active elements • same absorber • - can increase granularity Barrel+ EndCap Long Barrel CSC DCFBB20µs 500kHz Extend pixel eta range is an option DT ROB/ROS 20µs 1MHz Push/Pull Track Trigger Retrofit HF New HF Precision timing added to new calorimetry is an option under consideration, depends on studies and R&D • New EB electronics - New EE - extend longevity of HE/HF (cost optimization) • Option for pull trigger - new Muons electronics for further rate and latency increase …

  5. Scenario 2 and options: also replace EE and HE extend eta range Tracker Replacement (silicon and pixels) L1 Trigger Upgrade Endcap/Forward Calorimeters Muons Replace EE and HE extend eta range Complete forward with GEM/GRPC Track-Trigger EE/EB FE 10µs 500kHz Barrel+ EndCap Long Barrel CSC DCFBB20µs 500kHz Extend pixel eta range is an option DT ROB/ROS 20µs 1MHz Extending muon eta range is an option Push/Pull Track Trigger Precision timing added to new calorimetry is an option under consideration, depends on studies and R&D • New EB electronics, new EE, new HE, enhanced performance in forward region • Option to extend muon coverage (also requires option for tracking at high η?)

  6. Document on phase 2 cost and scope exercise • Internal document for July 29 MB/FB and then release to the collaboration • Baseline scenarios & options (with cost scales), plus targeted R&D and simulation studies • DESY week to motivate scenarios and options and to cut branches • Physics motivation and detector requirements • Detector longevity and sustainable integrated luminosity (LS3 delayed, staging) • Feasibility of upgrades (Track trigger latency - retrofit of forward calorimeters…) include consideration on technologies, need for R&Ds and issues at P5 • Simulation studies and preliminary performance results (narrow options include some in baseline scenarios?) • Size of effort/resources needed • Impact on shutdown plan/duration • Cost estimate • Each Project, Working group, PC, TC & Cross-coordination should draft a few pages on these points by the end of DESY week- to form the basis for the document • DESY week will be summarized at the following WGM for the collaboration • Simulation studies: • Goal for preliminary performance results by the ECFA workshop in Oct. • Further motivate scenarios and options (define priorities) • Document for the RRB to the MB in Sept.
