  1. News and MiscellaneousUPO Apr 05 2013Didier Contardo, Jeff Spalding • Test Beams 2014 • CMS Week (next week) • Phase 1 Scrutiny • Document to RRB  Cost Exercise for Phase 2 • HL-LHC PU • DESY week agenda • ECFA working groups

  2. Test Beams at CERN From LazaDragoslav.Lazic@cern.ch • There are no CERN test (or any other) beams in 2013 • In 2014 PS physics will start in mid-August and SPS in mid-October More information, such as where outside CERN can you get some test beam time in 2013,  can be found in CMS Test Beam Web page: http://cmsdoc.cern.ch/cms/testbeam/www/Welcome.html

  3. Upgrade Meetings during CMS Week • CMS plenary Monday afternoon • Phase 1 Upgrades J. Mans • Ideas, plans and needs for Phase 2 F. Chlebana • Upgrade plenary Wednesday afternoon • WG/TF meetings

  4. Phase 1 Scrutiny • CERN is setting up a Scrutiny Group for the Phase 1 Upgrades. This will be a separate group from the existing M&O-B Scrutiny Group • The group reports to the RRB. First report will probably be in Sep (for Oct RRB). Scrutiny could be in July • As for M&O-B, Andrzej will establish an internal scrutiny process • Need to establish internal and external reporting tables for cost and milestones. • Initial cost exercise was very instructive (DRAFT document NOT submitted) • Informing the RRB this meeting of our process: scope evaluation  describe full upgrade program with cost estimate in TP(2014), then each project in TDR(~2016) • We need to develop a framework for the cost exercise • FA’s are already asking for the cost scale. It is very likely that we will be asked to present cost information before the TP, perhaps by September • We need a framework for including cost into the scope deliberations: now through summer 2014 Phase 2 Cost Exercise

  5. Phase 2 Cost Framework Needed by September • A working cost matrix for estimating costs allowing inter-related choices of scope • Need to internally scrutinize cost estimates • We need a working version by June. How do we get there? • Process cannot be “public” until we have made some assessment of the upgrade scope and decided how to present • And a way of summarizing for public domain Needed by early 2014 • A funding matrix (hopefully not the same as the Phase 1 MM) • Understand better the relationship between projects and common items • Build it from the projects first, then from voluntary pledges? Proposed a new subgroup of the FB to discuss both

  6. HL-LHC PU • Ongoing discussions between UC in CMS and Atlas, plus Mike Hildreth (CMS) and Beate Heinemann (Atlas), Mike Lamont (LHC) • Atlas has been quoting and using 140 for <PU> at HL-LHC for 5E34 … this seems high • They use inelastic cross-section 85 mb (which is ~1s high in projections to 14 TeV), and then round up to 140 from 134 • We estimate a central value of 126 (which is 25 at 1E34) • Central value is a little under 79.3 mb (+/-5) • Bunch-to-bunch variation may make the average ~5% higher for some crossings and lower for others (to be quantified from 2012 data) • The choice of leveling value is up to the experiments. 5E34 is the “nominal” and we must simulate it. We should also study a higher value: 7 or 8E34? • While the text should explain the central value, studies can use higher values • More discussion to follow, with a specific proposal

  7. DESY Week Monday-Friday June 3-7 DESY, Hamburg Block timetable & travel information are on the web site. More details to follow. http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=236161 • Will include an Upgrade MB and a CB • Will have a poster session, CINCO link bellow https://cms-mgt-conferences.web.cern.ch/cms-mgt-conferences/conferences/conf_display.aspx?cid=1160 Registration is open since Mar. 1

  8. Monday and Tuesday Emphasis is on Phase 2 Scope reports and some working meetings for Phase 1 Monday • The HI-LHC physics program • Benchmark channels for guiding scope choices • What guidance can we get from gen. level & simulation of [aging] Phase 1 detector? Tuesday • Parallel

  9. Wednesday Detector Longevity • What detectors/systems MUST be replaced when? • Including electronics, DAQ… • And TC considerations • Answers to specific questions

  10. Thursday and Friday • Complete system survey w/Trigger • Straw man concepts for next round of studies

  11. HL-LHC ECFA workshop Oct. 1-3 2013 • Goal of the workshop • Develop a common approach to the HL-LHC program, find synergies and coordinate efforts in areas of common interest for the four experiments in the following areas: • Physics goals and reach – detector requirements and performance • Tracking devices and associated electronics and readout • Calorimetry and associated electronics and readout • Muonsystems and associated electronics and readout • Trigger/DAQ/Offline/Computing • Accelerator and Experiment interfaces, LS constraints and radiation levels • For each area, working groups with few representatives of all experiments and from CERN theory and accelerator divisions when relevant are being formed to prepare the workshop sessions • The CMS contributions will be based on the current detector R&D work and the follow-up of the simulation studies to define the scope of phase 2 (as discussed at the DESY upgrade week). A major goal is to present first physics reach results with few physics benchmarks.
