  2. Outline • Overview • Participants • Sharing Resources • Open Service • Research Supporting • Education Supporting • Planning Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007

  3. Overview AVLAB - Astronomical Virtual Laboratory A project of the China National S&T Basic Infrastructure Launched in April, 2006. An initiative to enable collaborative work for astronomers geographically distributed over the world Simple-to-use astronomical telescopes and astronomical data in Internet Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 3

  4. Participants Computer Network Information Center of CAS (CNIC) Steering organization National Astronomical Observatories of CAS (NAOC) Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of CAS (SHAO) Yunnan Astronomical Observatory of CAS(YAOC) Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 4

  5. Goals Enable remote access to astronomical resources distributed over China, such as astronomical telescopes and mass astronomical data for the astronomers. Provide a virtual environment for astronomers to communicate with each other in real time. Explore new collaborative working modes for astronomers and support advanced methods in astronomical research and education. Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 5

  6. Status The Portal for AVLAB has been established and opened to all users in Internet http://astro.v-lab.cn Apply and access telescopes remotely Get observation data immediately Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 6

  7. Sharing Resources Xinglong Station of NAOC 2.16m 80cm 30cm Sun Wide-angle Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 7

  8. Sharing Resources (cont.) Sheshan Station of SHAO 1.56m Telescope Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 8

  9. Sharing Resources (cont.) Lijiang Station of YAOC 2.4m Telescope Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 9

  10. Sharing Resources (cont.) Huairou Sun Station of NAOC Full-disc Telescope Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 10

  11. Open Services 7*24 stable service Anyone can become a member freely More than 100 people from China, Russia and Japan have become members of AVLAB and enjoy it Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 11

  12. User Statistics Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 12

  13. User Statistics (cont.) Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 13

  14. Research Supporting Telescope online application Online observation environment Collaborative observation Observation Data management Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 14

  15. Telescope Online Application Traditional way Email/Telephone Ineffective, long time, … Online way in AVLAB Submitting application Evaluation Allocation/Schedule Confirmation Announcement The application for 2.16m and 1.56m telescopes observation time in 2008 is being carried out Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 15

  16. Online observation environment Not need to care the boring nonessentials details Each telescope operated in an universal interface Several users can simultaneously share the same telescope Controller (one) Collaborator (several) Viewer (many) Controller can determine the range of Collaborator Controller can grant control priority to other collaborator temporarily Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 16

  17. Collaborative observation Several telescopes is controlled simultaneously by one user to observe the same object With the support of online observation environment of AVLAB, in the July of this year, we successfully carried out a collaborative observation Blazer, An Active Galactic Nuclei , AGN Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 17

  18. Collaborative observation(cont.) To research into the optical variability of Blazer, it need to two telescopes to observe in different wave band 2.16m telescope B band 1.56m telescope R band Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 18

  19. Collaborative observation(cont.) Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 19

  20. Observation Data management When one user carry out an online observation, the data (observation result) will be automatically backup in AVLAB. In the secrecy period (generally three year), the owner can download the data anytime and anywhere, while other people cannot. When the secrecy period expired, the data will be released automatically to public and anyone can share it. Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 20

  21. Education Supporting AVLAB support astronomical online education Enable the student use telescope in class, which was unbelievable beforetime Beijing Normal University Popular Science Sunspot star shower Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 21

  22. Planning More telescope will be available in AVLAB Many collaborative observation among more than two telescopes will be performed to meet the demands of several important projects A multimedia real-time communication tool will be deployed in AVLAB and users can communicate with each other in words, audio, video and electronic interactive white board Several key technologies for remote accessing radio telescope will be started Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007 22

  23. Thanks for your attention! http://astro.v-lab.cn Second EchoGrid Workshop Beijing – 29 & 30 October 2007
