  2. By the end of class… You will be able to list and describe the 4 A’s of Stress Management (Accept, Avoid, Alter, Adapt) Identify characteristics of a Stress-Resistant person

  3. Bell Ringer! Write down a stressful situation you’ve dealt with on each note card - Recent - A long time ago - Very Stressful -Low Stress

  4. Continuum Time! Rate the level of stress each situation would cause you… -10 = Not Stressful at all 0= You are Neutral about this 10= Would cause you High Stress May stand in the middle somewhere of continuum!

  5. ACCEPT When we can’t change the situation, sometimes we need to just accept it for what it is. Learn from the past? Talk with someone you trust? Use positive self-talk Keep smiling, despite difficulty Join a support group

  7. AVOID Plan ahead to rearrange your surroundings… Avoid someone who constantly bothers you Avoid taking on more than you can handle Leave the situation Avoid discussing certain topics

  8. ALTER Changing stressful situations may allow you to evade the stress all-together… Ask someone to change their behavior Tell the person how you feel Change the time, place, setting Manage your time better Be more assertive

  9. ADAPT By anticipating stressors in your life and making plans to adapt, you can save yourself a lot of aggravation… 1. Change your thinking -take it as an opportunity -Ask: will this matter in a year? -Ask: is it worth getting upset over?

  10. 2. Change yourfeelings -Picture yourself in a positive environment -Use relaxation techniques 3. Change your actions -Slow down -Exercise -Don’t overeat, smoke more, drink more -Talk to someone about it…

  11. Your Turn… In groups, decide what to do in each situation: Will you… Avoid it? Alter it? Adapt to it? Accept it? …WHY?

  12. Characteristics of a Stress Resistant Person What do you think a Stress Resistant Person acts like/looks like? Brainstorm!

  13. Characteristics… -Maintain reasonable control of their lives try different solutions until one works -Committed to a goal of some kind -Use minimum ‘substances’ -Practice ‘active relaxation’ at least 15 minutes a day -Aerobic Exercise -Seek out advice of others share feelings and ideas with these people

  15. Final Thoughts … to leave you with: What are the 4 A’s of dealing with a stressful situation? When would you use each? What are some characteristics of a stress resistant person? What are the benefits of learning to deal with stress in a positive way?
