Air Force Junior ROTC • Objectives are: • To educate and train in citizenship and life skills • Promote community service • Instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline • Not to recruit in the armed forces! • 1 P.E. Credit and/or Elective Credit Uniforms are government issued 1- 4 year program designed to provide skills to become successful in business, college, or any branch of the military

  8. District Graduation Policy • Students must complete allrequired coursework in order to participate in the graduation ceremony. • Students must also pass the Exit Level TAKS or STAAR requirements to receive a diploma.

Semesters & Credits • Treat semesters like the end of the year • Semester average determines credit • .5 credit per semester class • Semester average is on your permanent record • Semester Averaging – average of both semesters to determine final credit – (failing grade will still show on transcript)

GPA & Class Rank • GPA - Grade Point Average (Example: 3.62) • Shows personal performance • 4.0 and 5.0 scale shown on transcript • 5.0 scale reflects Honors classes • Class Rank • Shows comparison to other students based on GPA • 9th grade is important • Example: Graduating Class of 2013 – 375 students • Top 10% - 1 – 37 - Top 20% - 1 – 74

Pass/Fail • See counselor for application - only courses beyond graduation requirements may be taken Pass/Fail • Submit application with signatures – no later than one week after receiving the 3 week progress report for the 2nd and/or 5th 9 week marking period • You cannot ask for the grade once this has been applied for and accepted • You will receive grades on progress reports and report cards for eligibility purposes • Will receive a P (Pass) or F (Fail) for the semester grade on transcripts • Student may earn up to 4 credits Pass/Fail

Credit Options • Humble ISD Summer School • On Campus credit recovery with approval • Grad- Night School (seniors) • Texas Virtual School • Texas Tech Correspondence Course- • -$155 per course + materials (http://www.depts.ttuedu/ode/ec2k/heading.asp) • Texas Tech Credit by exam- • -Retrieval- must receive a grade of 70+ ($40 per test) • -Acceleration- no prior instruction, must receive a grade of 90+

TESTING REASONS TO TAKE PSAT • College readiness preparation • Experience gained for entrance exam, SAT • Opportunity for scholarships • Juniors may qualify for National Merit program announced in September 2013 • District pays for all 10th graders. • The date of the test is Wednesday, October 17.

Official High School Transcripts • See Registrar • Fill out request • Available within 48 hours • First Transcript Free • Subsequent transcripts – there may be a fee, depending on the method of transmission • Transcript from Fall 2012 will be available in January – with new GPA and Class Rank

Top Ten Percent Bill • Students ranking in the top 10% of their class are automatically admitted to any public university in Texas ( UT’s cap is 8% senior class, 7% junior class) • Complete application requirements by the university’s deadline • Enroll in college no more than two years after graduating from high school

College Admission Terms • Early Decision – A binding commitment to attend the college if you are accepted. • Early Action/Notification – Simply applying early so you will receive acceptance notification early – no commitment to attend. • Rolling Admission – Apply and usually receive an admission decision within four to six weeks

  27. Off to college…where to go? • Generally recommended that students apply to 3 – 5 colleges. • Select a “dream” (reach) school that may be a stretch. • Select at least one ( safe) “sure thing”. • A college should fit the student academically, personally, and socially. Be realistic! Ideally, have all applications completed by Thanksgiving

NCAA Clearinghouse Information The NCAA clearinghouse is for a student who plans to attend a NCAA Division I or II institution and who wishes to participate in intercollegiate athletics. • Please visit the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse Web site www.ncaaclearinghouse.net • By registering on-line, prospects will be able to: • View their eligibility information on-line • Will not have to call the clearinghouse for eligibility updates • View their eligibility status up to six weeks faster than through the paper registration process. • Student Athletes need to registrar at the conclusion of junior year. • The clearinghouse will not process a transcript with fewer than six semesters represented. • Please see Coach Holley and/ or Coach Lanehart for additional info.

National Honor Society • Students who think they might want to join NHS should start planning for it now • Students can apply for NHS in 10th grade (second semester) They can also apply as juniors and seniors • They must have a 3.8 GPA, less than 2 Saturday classes, and all the required leadership and service points • For more information see the KPark website under activities or contact Amy Wallace, A.P.
