  4. All Good Jobs Don’t Require College, but…. • You must have high school level math, reading, and writing skills. • 40% of H.S. Seniors lack 9th grade math skills, 60% lack 9th grade reading skills. • A rise of one letter grade in your H.S. GPA (from C to B) is associated with a 13% higher earnings by age 28. • Educational attainment and earnings are directly related to behavior, attendance, and work habits in high school.

  5. BHS Graduation Requirements • 220 credits • Pass CAHSEE • Pass all required classes(see next slide)

Path 1Minimum for Graduation from BHS • 4 yrs of English • 3 yrs of Math – must reach Algebra 1 at minimum • 2 yrs of Science • 3 yrs of History • 2 yrs P.E. plus pass Physical Fitness Test • 1 yr of Fine Arts OR a World Language • CTE (1semester) • Health (1 semester) • 60 credits of electives • Pass the CAHSEE

  7. Path 2Minimum for entrance to CSU and UC • 4 years of English • 3 years of Math (4 rec.) Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II • 2 years of Lab Science (3 rec.) Biology, Chemistry or Physics • 1 year of Fine Arts NO D’s ARE ACCEPTED FOR COLLEGE ADMISSION!!! • 2 years of History • 2 years of World Lang. • 1 year of College Prep elective • PSAT Soph and Junior year. • SAT or ACT Junior/Senior year

  8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS? • What kind of activities do you want to be involved in in school? • 4 year college? • Community college? • H.S. Diploma? • What kind of job do you want? • How much money do you want to earn? • What kind of “stuff” do you want to own?

  10. GPA = Grade Point Average • 4 points = A • 3 points = B • 2 points = C • 1 point = D • 0 points = F To calculate your GPA you must add up the sum of your grades and divide it by the number of classes you have. AP classes are weighted differently.

  11. Example of a GPA English 9 - B = 3 points Algebra 1 - A = 4 points Geography - D = 1 point Biology - C = 2 points PE 9 - A = 4 points Spanish I - F = 0 points Total = 14 points divided by 6 classes. GPA = 2.33

  12. CREDITS • How many would you have if the semester ended today? • How many classes would you have to retake if the semester ended today? • If you are planning on college, how many D’s would you have to fix?

What to do if you are getting D’s or F’s • Attend school everyday • Do your homework everyday • Study for tests and quizzes • Behave and pay attention in class • Talk to your teachers • Get tutoring - in library Mon and Wed 3-4 o’clock - check with your teacher for availability • Meet with counselor
