  7. SELF - CONCEPT Your perception of who you are. Your perception is based on attitudes and feelings that you have. Your self-image or identity. All of your life experiences have contributed to this. Inner You – the way you see yourself. Outer You – the way you present yourself.

From the inside out THE INNER YOU THE OUTER YOU • The inner you is the sum of all your thoughts and feelings about yourself and how you react to daily life. • The way you view and interpret a situation is often determined by your temperament. These individual differences exist as part of your personality as you mature. • Your temperament affects your point of view and determines how you perceive yourself and your experiences. • Your environment also influences your inner self: school, parents, etc. • The outer you is an expression of your self-concept. • Your appearance is determined by heredity and behaviour. • People notice your physical characteristics, your dress, your grooming, and your posture. • Your appearance and your behaviour create the first impression others form of you. • Behaviour also reflects the activities you choose, how you participate, how you speak to others.

If you have a positive self-concept, you: If you have a negative self-concept, you: • accept who you are and feel good about yourself • do not worry much about what other people say • trust your own judgment • tend to behave in an optimistic manner • feel confident • readily take on new challenges • focus on the positive aspects of any situation • participate collaboratively in groups • May worry about your shortcomings and failures • Are often afraid to try new things • Tend to have a pessimistic outlook • Feel inadequate and undeserving of positive attention • are unable to accept compliments • Are sometimes unco-operative • Tend to put yourself down • Often focus on the shortcomings of others

  10. Self-concept = Personal self Social self • How you see yourself: • Physically • personality • How you view yourself in relation to other people • E.g.. Are you sociable, a good sport, easy to talk to... Extended self Ideal self • Ideas or images outside of yourself that identify you: • -processions • -ideas • -a team, or group • The image you have of the person you would like to be • Things you admire in others; the way you would like to be....

  11. A healthy self concept.. • High self-esteem • You feel good about yourself • A realistic self-concept • What you know about yourself is accurate • A complete self-concept • The more you know about yourself, the more complete your self-image will be..

CHARACTER • TRUSTWORTHINESS ....INTEGRITY, HONESTY, LOYALTY..... • RESPECT ....ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS, TREATMENT OF OTHERS... • RESPONSIBILITY ....MEET OBLIGATIONS, ACCEPT CONSEQUENCES..... • FAIRNESS .....TREAT PEOPLE EQUALLY, ACT WITHOUT PREJUDICE OR FAVOURITISM • CARING ....ACT WITH CONCERN FOR OTHERS, CONSIDERATE.... • CITIZENSHIP ....SHARE, RESPECT AUTHORITY, VOLUNTEER, PARTICPATE....
