  4. Identity Is developed over time. Involves TANGIBLE and INTANGIBLE characteristics.

  5. Body Image • very vulnerable to developmental changes and to actual or potential threats.

  6. Self esteem • How I feel about how I see myself.

  7. Role performance • A set of expectations of how the person occupying one position behaves toward individuals in other positions.

  8. 4 Criteria by which we judge ourselves: • 1. power • 2. significance • 3. competence • 4. virtue

Self concept assessment • Sample questions: • “How do you feel about the changes in your body that have come about as a result of ___________?” • “What do you see as your strengths/weaknesses that you bring to the new role of ____________?” • “Tell me what you like/dislike about _____________.” • “Tell me what is hardest about __________.”

  11. Enhancing self esteem • Praising • Modeling • Positive feedback • Self talk • Mental imagery • Allow choices/control • Communicate respect
