  3. Characteristics • Shape: Coccus • Gram Stain: Negative • Membrane made of Lipopolysaccharides • Obligate Aerobe • Heterotrophic • Reproduces through Binary Fission • Classified as a Diplococcal Bacteria • Not Mobile

  4. Diseases • Causes Meningococcal disease or Meningitis • Occurs when Neisseria Meningitidis causes inflammation of brain tissue and spinal cord • Can cause pneumonia if Neisseria Meningitidis infects the lungs • 10% of all patients don’t survive • Patients are mostly African Americans

  5. Treatment • Meningococcal can be treated with Antibiotics • Antibiotics such as: Penicillin G or Ceftriaxone
