  2. Surveyors use specialised equipment (including highly accurate GPS, robotic laser instruments and laser scanners) to perform a wide variety of measurement surveys. Surveyors work in: Cadastral Surveying Land development The construction industry The mining industry Hydrographic surveying - Aerial photogrammetry Surveying involves a mix of outdoor and indoor work. Surveying – What is it?

  3. Different examples of surveying

  4. MY CHALLENGES OF TERTIARY STUDY • Moving to a foreign environment • Where’s my security net? • Responsible for your own education • finding a groove

  5. Strategies to overcome challenges • Plan well into the future (money, accommodation, work) • Stay focused on your goals • Make an effort to make new friends and socialise • Maintain a good study/life balance Geography – Where does it take you?

  6. Success through scholarships • Apply for scholarships, you would be surprised at how many people overlook these opportunities because they believe they will not get the scholarship • I have received over $25,000 of RMIT scholarships in four years just by being a rural student • Rural Grant – a scholarship of up to $5000 for students who demonstrate they are from a rural background and need monetary assistance in order to achieve their tertiary goals • Study support scholarship - $2500 per year, for each year of the degree. A scholarship available to all students If you are experiencing financial difficulties and/or at a disadvantage during your education, this scholarship could assist you with your study costs. • Centrelink? ($500 per fortnight, $1000 at the start of each semester) Geography – Where does it take you?

  7. How to apply for/get a scholarship • Not all scholarships are not for the best of the best or academic achievements, there are a range of scholarships available. The whole point of a scholarship is to assist people achieve their goals and recognise and support people who wish to achieve a goal • It’s very easy • Don’t rush applications, take your time, fill them out thoroughly and check you have met every requirement or submission (supporting information or documents are often required with a successful submission) • Be aware of what's available to you through your particular university. Most universities have scholarship offices/departments and loads of online information. • Covering letter always helped me (well thought out and explaining why you need the scholarship. It should be a professional document, not a sop story) Geography – Where does it take you?

  8. Final thoughts… • It’s worth it. Consider it a positive investment in your own future. Or in a parents case, your child's future. Nothing worth having comes easy. • It’s not just studying and managing living away from home. It’s a life changing experience. • You will learn much more through the entire journey than just gaining a degree “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ― Winston Churchill Geography – Where does it take you?
