  3. So where does all this oxygen come from?? • PLANTS performing PHOTOSYNTHESIS!

  4. What does photosynthesis mean? • Photo = light • Synthesis = creating • Photosynthesis = creating with light Purpose: Plants use light to create sugars (glucose-C6H12O6)

  5. What is photosynthesis? • The process in which plants convert light energy into chemical energy (sun glucose). • Occurs in the chloroplast

  6. Guided Notes: Photosynthesis • Photosynthesis is how plants use sunlight to make oxygen and sugar. • Look familiar? • It’s just respiration in reverse! Reactants (what goes in) Products (what comes out) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H2O) (CO2) +ENERGY from sunlight Oxygen + Sugar (O2) (C6H12O6)

  8. The Magic of Chloroplasts 1. Plants gather the sun’s energy with light-absorbing molecules called pigments. 2. Inside of chloroplasts the main pigment that is used is called chlorophyll.

  11. Chlorophyll • 3. Chlorophyll is the part of the plant that gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll absorbs blue, violet, and red light, but reflects green light. • This is why plants are green. • Carotenereflects orange light. Where is chlorophyll found? - Inside the chloroplasts!

  12. Within the chloroplast pictured above are disc like structures arranged in stacks called grana. The stack like membranes contains pigments that absorb light energy.   14. Water enters the plant through the roots and travels up to the leaf through the veins. Water then travels to each cell through a process known as OSMOSIS.

  15. Stomata Stomata are the little “holes” on a plant leaf that regulates the gas exchange in plants.

  16. Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through the stomata. Carbon dioxide then travels to each cell through a process known as Diffusion.

  21. Why is cellular respiration important to Producers? • Animals produce the carbon dioxide needed by producers to create sugar (C6H12O6)
