  2. Contour Drawing Contour drawing is a technique used in the field of art in which the artist sketches the contour of a subject by drawing lines that result in a drawing that results in an outline A “subject” is what you are drawing… Example: If you are drawing your friend Steve, Steve would be the subject of your drawing.

  3. Examples

  4. Now you try… Look at yourself in the mirror provided and draw a contour drawing of yourself.

  5. One more… Draw a contour drawing of the upside down man

  6. Blind Contour • You DON’T look at your drawing • You ONLY look at the subject

  7. Now You Try…

  8. Try this one…

  9. One more time…

  10. Cross contour Like contour drawing, cross contour drawing involves drawing an object using only line. Unlike contour drawing, cross contour drawing deals with illustrating the way an object sits in space using lines.

  11. Now you try…

  12. Try again… • Draw a contour drawing of your hand and create a cross contour drawing by adding lines.

  13. Composition • Composition – the art term for how the things in the artwork are arranged. • A good composition would be well balanced, in an interesting pose or organization, and well thought out • A bad composition would only us a small amount of the page, or have the object sitting in the middle of the page, or drawing too small

  14. Arrangement of Objects • Many good compositions have 3 elements: • Foreground • Middle Ground • Background

  15. Foreground • Foreground – things that are closest to the viewer, usually larger and in the bottom of the picture plane

  16. Middle Ground • Middle Ground – things that are in the middle of the picture, medium sized and behind the foreground

  17. Background • Background – things are smaller and higher in the picture plane, behind the foreground and middle ground
