  1. EMMA 24th February 2009 ALICE Stakeholder Meeting

  2. EMMA Layout IOT Racks

  3. EMMA Infrastructure upgrade in progress in ALICE Accelerator Hall

  4. Injection Line Assembly in progress in S Block

  5. Integration ALICE Diagnostics Beamline IOT Rack RF Distribution

  6. Aims & Objectives of EMMA Project World’s first NS-FFAG (non-scaling Fixed Field Alternating Gradient) accelerator • FFAG: Field fixed in time but varies across pipe • Nonscaling: Dipole field scales with momentum but focussing quadrupole fields do not – • Optics changes during acceleration • Betatron Tune changes during acceleration • Resonances unavoidable • But rapid acceleration means this is not fatal. (We hope)

  7. CONFORM CONFORM ( COnstruction of a Nonscaling FFag for Oncology, Research, and Medicine ) www.conform.ac.uk/ • Total funds £6.9m over 4 year project lifecycle from RCUK Basic Technology from 1st April 2007 • Led by University of Manchester and The Cockcroft Institute including RAL, JAI, and others. Also FNAL, Brookhaven, Grenoble • EMMA design and construction • PAMELA design study for hadron therap machine • Applications study for other applications • BASROC (British Accelerator Science and Radiation Oncology Consortium) umbrella group of academic, medical and industry specialists in accelerator and medical technology with the aim of promoting the use of accelerators in science, industry and medicine. www.basroc.org.uk/

  8. EMMA Basic Parameters

  9. Requirements • Full aperture injection and extraction at all energies 10 – 20 MeV • Many lattice re-tunings (vary ratio of dipole to quadrupole fields) • Vary frequency, amplitude and phase of RF cavities • Non-accelerated operation to map closed orbits and tunes vs momentum • Map longitudinal and transverse acceptances with probe beam • To be heavily instrumented with beam diagnostics, etc.

  10. Ring Magnets • Requirements / Solution • Adjust dipole & quadrupole components independently - Mount magnets on independent radial linear slides • Fields identical in every cell despite kickers and septum - Field clamps at cell entrance face of QD & exit face of QF. Adjusted at the factory • Very large good field region for range of closed orbits - Optimised pole profile implemented • Due to extreme compactness of lattice, D & F magnets • Are in very close proximity. Consequence: field computation and measurement with both magnets in place has been essential. Results from the prototype measurements have been implemented in the lattice simulations • Are short compared with aperture. Consequence: integrated strength is dominated by end-field contributions All magnets scheduled to be delivered from TESLA by 10th April 2009

  11. RF Cavities • 20 (19 + spare) production cavity construction in progress – give fast acceleration • 4 of 5 batches delivered to DL • 5th batch – scans awaiting approval by DL

  12. In house design of septum and vacuum chamber in progress Wire eroding of lamination stacks is in progress. Delivery scheduled for Feb – Mar 2009 Manufacture Misc. septum components Apr – May 2009 Magnet measurements scheduled for Jun 2009 Injection/Extraction Septum Design Section view of septum in vacuum chamber ISO view of septum with vacuum chamber removed Plan view of septum in vacuum chamber

  13. Kicker Magnet Design • Kicker component manufacture by Brite Precision, Newbury • Ferrite blocks manufactured by Ceramic Magnetics, New Jersey • Prototype kicker magnet complete. Four production devices to follow subject to successful testing • Delivery to APP in early March to be used as the test load for the kicker power supplies 100 mm Ferrite CDM5005 C core (Ceramic Magnetics, New Jersey)

  14. Standard Ring Vacuum Chamber • Contract placed for BPM pickups with Testbourne. Delivered November 2008 • Contract placed with VG Scienta for the vacuum chambers. Manufacture in progress – Batch Delivery – March 2009 • Clean vacuum testing & RGA cleanliness tests at the factory before delivery to Daresbury • Particle processing at Daresbury BPM Block

  15. RF Distribution • Contact placed with Q-Par Angus in Oct. 2008 • Manufacture and testing in progress • Delivery due end of March 2009

  16. RF Source • Inductive Output Tube • VIL409 90 kW Transmitter • Contact placed with CPI in Sep. 2008 • Full testing at CPI before delivery • Delivery due end of March 2009 • Commissioning at Daresbury in late April – early May
