  1. Open Response: setting up the quote • Not summarizing what is going on in your own words makes the quote confusing for the reader • Ex. Also Bones and Jim have a serious and hardworking relationship: “Discipline Jim! Jim! Jim: Yessir, cap’m. Aye sir!” • What are they talking about? • In order for the reader to know that you are not just plucking quotes from the excerpt: explain the situation

  2. Look back to the excerpt: • What does Bones mean when he says “Discipline!”? • Bones is talking about how long it took Jim to respond Setting up the quote Before inserting the quote in your response…. Explain that Bones is complaining about Hawkin’s slow response

  3. Let’s try this again… • Bones and Jim have a serious, hardworking relationship. First, Bones scolds Jim for not being quick and responding immediately:“Discipline Jim! Jim! Jim: Yessir, cap’m. Aye sir!”Jim shows his willingness to obey by responding in a serious, respectful way. • Answer the prompt. • Explain the situation/set up example. Quote to provide support. Explanation to show HOW quote proves your point.

  5. Setting up the quote: application • Jim and Bones have a trusting relationship. When Bones is nervous about a presence outside, he trusts Jim to check it out for him: “Quick Jim, step to the door and put yer head out.” Bones is able to show Jim that he is nervous about something and rely on him for help, so he must trust him.
