  3. Physical Characteristics • The temperature is extremely cold here. It is mainly found near the poles…which probably explains the cold temperatures. The average winter temperature is 34 degrees Celsius, while the average summer temperature is between 3-12 degrees Celsius. The yearly precipitation average is 15 to 25 cm, or 6 to 10 inches. You can expect to see snow on the ground when you go to a tundra biome. There are mountainous regions in the tundra biome.

  4. Plant Life • In the Arctic tundra, there are over 1,700 species of plants. Some of these include low shrubs, sedges, reindeer mosses, liverworts, and grasses. The plants here are adapted to be able to withstand cold temperatures. They are short and close together, and they can photosynthesize at very low temperatures. There can be trees in the Arctic tundra, but not in the Alpine tundra. Alpine tundra is located on high elevations on mountains, where trees cannot grow.

  5. Animal Life • There isn’t an extremely wide variety of animals in the tundra biome, or in other words, there is a low biodiversity. There are some herbivorous animals like squirrels and arctic hare, and also some carnivorous animals like polar bears, wolves (), and arctic foxes. Some fish include cod, salmon, and trout. Animals living in the Alpine tundra include mountain goats, elk, and sheep.

  6. Extra Information • Due to global warming, the permafrost in the tundra areas are being reduced. Want to hear something funny, the global warming is causing the permafrost to melt, but under the permafrost is 14% of earths carbon. As the permafrost melts, the carbon is released into the atmosphere, where it helps contribute to more global warming. The permafrost is supposed to act as a sink, just like the ocean, but now global warming is causing more global warming with the melting of the permafrost.
