Predicate Words. Complementing your writing  . Subject Complements. A Linking Verb connects the subject of a sentence to a word or words in the predicate. This word is called a SUBJECT COMPLEMENT. The subject complement identifies or describes the subject.

  2. Subject Complements • A Linking Verb connects the subject of a sentence to a word or words in the predicate. This word is called a SUBJECT COMPLEMENT. • The subject complement identifies or describes the subject. • There are two types of complements…

  3. Predicate Noun (Nominative) • A Predicate Noun is a noun that follows a linking verb and identifies, renames, or defines the subject. • Example: The dessert is chocolate cake. LV Predicate Noun

  4. i-Try • Circle the linking verb and underline the predicate noun. • 1. Milk is a source of calcium. • 2. Tortillas are corn “pancakes.” • 3. The Italian word for pie is pizza. • 4. Food is a basic need.

  5. Predicate Adjectives • A predicate adjective follows a linking verb and describes a quality of the subject. • Example: The dessert tastes delicious after the meal. Linking Verb Predicate Adj.

  6. i-Try • Circle the Linking Verb and underline the Predicate Adjective Twice. • 1. The variety of foods seems incredible! • 2. Tortillas with meat, cheese and hot salsa taste spicy. • 3. Pizza is popular throughout the world. • 4. Many fruits are popular snacks.

  7. i-Try Shuffle • Circle the Linking Verb; mark PN for Predicate Noun and PA for Predicate Adjective. • 1. My mother is a great baker. • 2. Her chocolate chip cookies are awesome. • 3. Her brownies are famous. • 4. Her apple pies are masterpieces. • 5. Unfortunately, many of her recipes remain secret.
