  2. Composition Book • If not already done so, put: Name, class period in ink on front cover. • On top of first open page, write title: Tools of the Trade

  3. ChemCatalyst (Do Now) • Matter is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space. Make a list of at least 4 tools or pieces of equipment you think a chemist might use in order to measure the mass and volume of some matter. • Answer the question in your composition book

  4. The Big Question • What tools do chemists use in a lab setting when studying matter? Unit 1 • Investigation I

  5. In this Activity you will be introduced to the many different laboratory tools that chemists use. You will also understand each tools application or use You will determine which tools are most likely used together to perform more complicated tasks

  6. By the end of the lab, you should be able to… Name Locate Explain the use of some of the equipment used in studying chemistry. Unit 1 • Investigation I

Procedure Form Groups • Each group will be given a box that contains an assortment of science equipment • In your composition book, each person will write a brief description of each tool in the box, its use and its location in the room, if possible. • The use descriptions are on paper that is on display around the room. • A member will go to each paper, copy the information and report back to the group. The people move NOT the papers.

  8. !!WARNING!! • There may be items placed in your box that do not have a card. Sketch each one and as a group come up with a purpose or use for each one

  9. DO … • Not shake the box (There are glass objects in each) • Place all objects back in box when not in active use. • Not take objects with you in search of their description paper • All tools must be in box by end of class

  12. Making Sense 1. What tools would be used to heat up a liquid that is not going to bubble or splutter? No open flames may be used. Unit 1 • Investigation I

What tools would be needed for the following lab exercise: • Measure out 3 different chemicals (30g of Solid #1, 20g of Solid #2 solids and 300g of a liquid) • Place them together in one container designed for reactions that would be release a gas • Stir them at a constant rate for 15 minutes
