Building Community Valuing One Another
New Life Community • This place is a refuge from the world • It’s not a building, it’s not an organization • More than a building, more than a Sunday morning meeting, more than an organization. A community. A place where people come together. A place where people care about, and take care of, one another. A place where every person matters. A place where, if you don’t show up, somebody notices.
Ways to Determine Value • There are several ways to determine value that we’ll look at today: • What is someone willing to pay for something? • The appraisal of an expert • What is their specific skill? Is it hard to find?
We Have Value Because of What God has Given for Us • April 1996, the “Ultimate Garage Sale” took place. • JFK Memorabilia was sold • Some of the items included: JFK’s Rocking Chair for $442,500 Fake Pearl Necklace for $211,500 Set of Golf Clubs, woods only for $772,500 13 pairs of Salt/Pepper Shakers for $11,500 • Overall the garage sale brought in 34.5 million dollars! • Why were these items valuable?
Now Consider This • Acts 2:22-24 ““People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene[d] by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. 23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him. 24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.” • Gal 1:3-4 “May God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ[a] give you grace and peace. 4 Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live.” • Gal 2:20 “My old self has been crucified with Christ.[a] It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. “
Now Consider this… • Who is a greater expert than God? • God considered YOU to be worth the cost of His Own Son • John 3:16-18 ““For this is how God loved the world: He gave[g] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” • Romans 8:32 “Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?” • What would you pay to get your child back?
Sometimes we don’t feel too Valuable • You may feel like a beat up old golf club or a fake set of pearls! • In an auction catalog where would you place your value? $10, $50, $100, $1 Million or worthless? • What does God say when the auction begins? • God knows what you are really worth!
What about that person sitting next to you? • You know, the one we think is slow-witted, annoying, loudmouthed. • What is he or she worth? • God never makes mistakes
We Have Value Because of How God has Gifted Us • Another way of looking at value is to look at the rarity of the gift that one possesses • The harder it is to find someone to do the job the more value the job has
As Believers we have great Value • Why? • Because God has entrusted us to tell everybody the good news about Jesus Christ • 1 Thess 2:4 “For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.”
The Message is In YOU! • Timothy Keller “The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” • John Schaff ““This Jesus of Nazereth without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caeser, Muhammad and Napoleon; without science and learning, He shed more light on matters human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of schools, He spoke such words of life as were never spoke before or since and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator poet; without writing a single line, He set more pens in motion and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”
He has also Given us the Church • 1 Cor 12:7; 14-21 “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.; Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15 If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” • Eph 4:16 “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”
We Have Value Because God Will Glorify Us • “It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship. . . . There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. . . . It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit.” – C.S. Lewis, “The Weight of Glory”
Glorified! • 1 Cor 15:42-44; 53 “It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. 43 Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. 44 They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.; For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.” • Phil 3:20-21 “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. 21 He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.”
Glorified! • We are perishable • We are subject to disease, injury, age and death. • But a day is coming! • What would happen if we reminded ourselves that the person next to us, in front of us, behind us is an eternal being?
Conclusion • DL Moody ““Someday you will read in the papers, ‘D. L. Moody of East Northfield is dead.’ Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now; I shall have gone up higher, that is all, out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal—a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body. I was born of the flesh in 1837. I was born of the Spirit in 1856. That which is born of the flesh may die. That which is born of the Spirit will live forever.” • J. Oswald Sanders wrote: “We will have bodies fit for the full life of God to indwell and express itself forever. We will be able to eat but will not need to. We will be able to move rapidly through space and matter. We will be ageless and not know pain, tears, sorrow, sickness, or death. We will have bodies of splendor.” (Heaven: Better by Far, p. 79)
