Core Competence:Languages and Description Techniques - SDL, MSC, CHILL, ODL, TTCN - Language Combinations, including UML General Software Issues: - Methods and Guidelines for use - Middleware and Architectures
Study Group 10 Differentiation • Distributed communicating systems • Formal, allowing verification and validation • Commercial tool support • User needs catered for Industry and Standards, e.g. SG 11
Key SDL, MSC and UML Priorities • Maintain and update SDL and MSC • Joint use of UML with SDL, MSC and other ITU-T languages • Encourage and support take-up of SDL and MSC concepts, if not language, at OMG • Encourage and support take-up of SDL and MSC concepts into UML 2.0
Questions for 2000 - 2004 (Extract) • Question 2/10 ODL: Object Definition Language • Question 4/10: Unified Modelling Language (UML) combined with ITU-T Languages • Question 6/10: SDL • Question 9/10: MSC • Question 11/10: DCL: Deployment and Configuration Language • Question 12/10 - URN: User Requirements Notation
Key Challenges Ahead • Integrating ITU-T and non-ITU languages and methods • Providing various mixes adapted to user needs • Expanding in the Internet area • Breaking into new application areas beyond telecommunications
Results and achievements • New Recommendations (Z Series) for: • SDL, MSC, ODL, CHILL • UML with SDL, SDL with ASN.1 • Acceptance has increased significantly • Use in ITU-T for protocols, e.g. IN • Use in the development process, e.g. for mobile phones • Use started for Internet protocols (TIPHON)
Strategy for the next 4 Years • Concentration on the core competence of languages and description techniques • Careful diversification into related general software and middleware issues • Further strengthen co-operation with tool vendors • Maintain and strengthen focus on users within and outside ITU-T • their needs are our guidance
