The present paper intends to analysis the growth and distribution of scheduled caste population in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. • The paper is mainly based on secondary source of data collected from various sources such as district census hand book, socio-economic abstract, SC/ST reports etc. • This type of analysis is useful for the socio-economic development planning purpose • Scheduled castes mean such castes, races or tribes or parts of or groups within castes, races or tribes as are deemed under Article 341 of the Constitution to be the scheduled castes for the purpose of the constitution

  3. OBJECTIVE • Present paper aims to study the growth and distribution of scheduled caste population in the Kolhapur district.

  4. STUDY AREA The Kolhapur district of Maharashtra state has been selected as an area for the present investigation. It lies between 15043’north and 17017’ north latitude and 73040’east and 74042’ east longitude, comprising 12 tahsils.

DATABASE AND METHODOLOGY • The present paper intends to analysis the growth and distribution of scheduled caste population in Kolhapur district. • It is based on the secondary source of data mainly collected from District Census Handbooks and Socio-Economic Abstract of Kolhapur district, Government SC/ST reports, etc.

  6. DATABASE AND METHODOLOGY • Simple percentage of scheduled caste population to the total population in the tahsil has been computed. Tahsil wise simple decadal growth rate has been computed by employing the fallowing formula: • Pt2 – Pt1 • Growth Rate = ------------------ x 100 • Pt1 • Where, P1 = Population of previous decade • P2 = Population of current decade.

GROWTH RATE OF SCHEDULED CASTE POPULATION • The growth of scheduled caste population in India was 20.56 per cent in 1991-2001. • The growth of non-schedule population in India was 21.73 per cent per cent in 1991-2001. • The growth rate of scheduled caste population in Maharashtra in 1991-2001 was 12.83 per cent and non- scheduled caste population was 23.96 per cent. It is clear that, the growth of the non-scheduled caste population was high in both state as well as country as a whole.

  10. DISTRIBUTION OF SCHEDULED CASTE POPULATION • The proportion of scheduled caste population in Kolhapur district was 12.76 per cent in 2001. Maharashtra has low proportion of scheduled caste population than the study area but high proportion of scheduled caste population than study area. • At tahsil level the dissemination was very uneven in 2001. It is found that the proportion of non-scheduled caste population in Kolhapur district was 87.24 per cent in 2001.

CONCLUSION • It is observed that, the growth rate of scheduled caste population in the study area was 18.01 per cent and non-scheduled caste was 17.83 per cent in 2001. • It is found that, Kolhapur district the proportion of scheduled caste population was 12.76 per cent in 2001. • It is identified that the concentration of scheduled caste population lowest in Ajra tahsil and highest in Shirol tahsil. • There are five tahsils such as Kagal, Karvir, Bavda, Hatkanangle and Shirol their concentration of population was above the average and remaining six tahsils was below the average. • The study mainly suggested that the socio-economic development planning should take place in backward areas.
