  2. Geological Features • Desert- An extremely dry region with about little to no plant life present. • About 1/3 of Earth’s landmass is desert. • Often created because they are located in a rain shadow. • Usually have less vegetation to prevent erosion. • Includes alluvial fan, arroyo, bajada, blowout, butte, desert pavement, desert varnish, dunes and flash floods. • characteristics: sparse vegetation & animals, cacti, succulents, drought tolerant, reptiles, insects, rodents, birds

  3. Temperature • Not much precipitation; occasional showers • Variable daily & seasonally, hot & cold

  4. Types of Plants • Cactus, Mesquite, Creosote, Ocotillo, Desert Ironwood, Joshua Tree, Jumping Cholla, Mojave Aster • Most plants are drought resistant.

  5. Human Impact on desert • A human activity that hurts the desert is off roading. The reason why off roading hurts the desert is: • They leave tracks in the desert • The tracks kill plants, and the animals can’t eat dead plants • It also kills animals that hide in the sand

  6. Types of animals • Texas horned lizard • Ostrich • Black widow • Desert toad • Roadrunner
