  1. Savannah River Site Overview Dennis Knapp Waste Certification Program Lead Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC September 17 – 21, 2012 ASP 2012 Workshop Idaho Falls, ID

  2. Savannah River Site (SRS) Introduction • Site History and Scope • Current Activities • SRS Participation in DOECAP K Area Cooling Tower Demolition

  3. SRS – Site History and Scope Established in November 1950, the Savannah River Site’s primary mission was to produce special nuclear materials (such as plutonium-239 and tritium) used in the production of nuclear materials. Five towns and six thousand residents were relocated to create the site. Five SNM-production reactors, along with support facilities to separate and purify reactor products, were constructed and operated until 1992. With the continued emphasis that SRS is not a “closure site”, waste management, environmental restoration, plutonium disposition, and D&D/ footprint reduction activities have become the primary missions for SRS.

  4. SRS – Current Site Contractors • Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC- M&O for Site & Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) • Savannah River Remediation Co., LLC (URS) - Liquid Waste Operations • Wackenhut Services Inc. • Shaw AREVA MOX Services (PDCF, WSB, and MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility) • Parsons - Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) • AmerescoInc. - Clean Energy Biomass Facility • Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL) • USDA Forestry Services

  5. SRS – Recovery Acts Accomplishments Reduced DOE EM life-cycle costs by more than $1 Billion through acceleration of D&D and environmental restoration projects and reduction of the operational footprint. • Decommissioned 14 radioactively contaminated facilities (including 3 nuclear reactors) and 16 industrial facilities contaminated with hazardous materials • Demolished 917,847 square feet of facilities/structures • Placed 254,882 cubic yards of grout to close waste units and nuclear facilities • Treated over 6.5 million gallons of radioactive and contaminated water • Disposed of over 52,000 cubic yards of debris and 90,000 cubic yards of soils • To date, met 3,177 Federal Facility Agreement & RCRA Permit commitments on or ahead of schedule

  6. SRS – Recovery Acts Accomplishments SRS Footprint Reduction 28% P, R, and C Areas 26% M & D Areas Base Scope General Site Area 21% 75% Total Efficiency Scope Lower Three Runs and Additional C-Area 10% 85% Total

  7. SRS – Recovery Acts Accomplishments P Reactor at Completion, September 2011 Rx. Heat Exchangers rigged for disposal 235-F Stack Reduction

  8. SRS – Recovery Acts Accomplishments Disposition of Legacy Waste and Materials • At the start of the ARRA, SRS had ~5,200 m3 of legacy TRU. • To date 3,444 m3 has been disposed. • 200 m3 of remaining wasteis categorized as “difficult” and is undergoing characterization/remediation. • SRS is on track to be the first DOE large quantity site to complete disposal of all TRU legacy waste

  9. SRS – New Projects/Facilities Clean Energy Biomass Facility The 34-acre facility converts biomass such as local forest residue, wood chips and old shredded tires, converting it into steam that generates enough power to run 30% of the site´s operations.

  10. August, 2007 SRS – New Projects/Facilities Accomplishments: Facilities Engineering bldg, Training Center, Construction Management bldg, Equipment Engineering bldg, Process Unit Assembly bldg, Secure Warehouse, Administration Complex, Electrical Substation and several other support bldgs all complete. MOX Hot Start-up scheduled for 2016 March, 2012

  16. Future Analytical Needs and Procured Services Continue existing level of laboratory support for baseline activities. No ARRA work planned for 2013. Future TSDF Needs and Procured Services The Solid Waste Baseline has mixed waste management activities forecasted through 2031. However, due to significant projected shortfalls in the CR FY 13 budget SRS DOECAP participation will need to be statused as TBD for each scheduled audit. SRS – DOECAP Participation/Projected Use
