  1. Solar Charging Systems Mike Ambrisco

  2. Overview • Background info. • Why do we need a charging system? • What happens without a charging system? • What does a charging system do? • Why should we use a charging system? • What are our options?

  3. Background • Without a charge system. • Damage can occur to all parts of the solar system. • To much current will flow to the batteries causing them to overheat. • The system will waste electricity. • The voltage output of the system will fluctuate.

  4. Background • What does a charging system do? • Optimizes the energy flow of the system. • Switches from charging mode to power mode. • Allows the batteries to not be drained when the sun is out. • Provides proper charging. • Manages the current flow into the battery. • If the battery is near dead it charges at a fast rate. • If the battery is near full charging speed is reduced or stopped.

  5. How A Charging System Works Input signal Charge Controller Output Signal (fluctuating Signal) (Optimizes Signal) (Optimized Signal)

  6. Why A Charging System Is Used • Charging Systems display information. • Energy produced, Energy used, Charging status. • Useful tool to maximize efficiency. • Ensures the safety of you home. • All devices in your solar system will be protected. • Power spikes will be nonexistent keeping your electronics and batteries safe and providing a long lifetime of use.

  7. Options • Build a charge controller. • Provides our team with knowledge. • Allows for easy customizability. • Time Consuming. • Buy a charge controller. • Readily available. • Many different options. • Plug it in and forget it.

  8. Options • PV Charge Controller SBC-6112 (economy model) • Provides LED indication of battery level and charging status. • Temperature range 14°F to 122°F. • Size/Weight, (6 x 3.25 x 1.75) / 1.0 Pounds • Standby mode drain 30mA. • $49.00 • PV Charge Controller SBC-7112 (industrial model) • Provides LED indication of battery level and charging status, and a LCD Display screen. • Temperature range 14°F to 122°F. • Size/Weight, (6 x 3.25 x 1.75) / 1.1 Pounds • Standby mode drain 30mA. • $72.00
