  2. The Industrial Revolution & Imperialism • American industry and product production rose as a result of the Industrial Revolution. • Americans could not buy all the goods the country was producing = looked to foreign markets • In order to reach far off places, the U.S. need to build………??????

  3. YES SHIPS!!!!! • Alfred Thayer Mahan- advocate of building a strong Navy. 1. increasing production demanded we expanded overseas for new markets 2. make sure no nation owns islands within three thousand miles of San Francisco. 3. A powerful Navy must be built

Former American possessions- The following areas have at one time or another been under the control of the United States of America and have not been fully incorporated into the country as states. • American Samoa (1900-) • Cuba (1899-1902, -now independent; however, Guantanamo Bay remains under the control of the U.S. military) • Dominican Republic (occupied 1916-1924) • Guam (1898-present, obtained by treaty with Spain following the Spanish-American War) • Haiti (occupied 1915-1934) • Liberia 1820-1847, now independent) • Panama Canal Zone (1903-1979) (now part of Panama) • Philippines 1898-1946, now independent. • Puerto Rico 1898-1952, now a US commonwealth • U.S. Virgin Islands (1917-)

  9. America in the Virgin Islands • Named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Only U.S. Territory where traffic drives on the left . • In 1917 during WWI, the United States bought the Islands and they became a territory.

  10. What is a Territory??? • The people who live on the islands are U.S. citizens, but cannot vote in U.S. Presidential elections, but can vote in primaries. • The residents have been given the choice of independence or statehood.

  11. America’s Interest in Cuba • Sugar and $$$ • Control of the Gulf of Mexico • Cubans revolted against Spanish oppressors= endangered America’s economic interest

The Yellow Press • William Randolph Hearst- and the Yellow Press • Spanish minister to US wrote a The DeLome letter saying Pres McKinley was “weak & a bidder for the admiration of the crowd” • Cuban spy found the letter, sold it to Hearst • U.S. Media pushes the nation into a war against Spain • America sends a fleet to Cuba to protect its interests

  16. Fighting in the Philippines • 1st battle of the war fought in the Spanish colonies of the Philippines • Commodore George Dewey • US attacked Spanish navy at Manilia Bay • Spanish navy fleet destroyed in minutes! • Spain surrendered in Aug 1898

In Cuba Rough Riders • Military unit commanded by Leonard Wood and organized by Theodore Roosevelt • 1000 college athletes, cowboys, American Indians, & ranchers • charged on foot • Most soldiers were half naked • -July 3- Entire Spanish fleet sunk & no damage • done to U.S. ships the war ends! • Majority of soldiers died due to disease • and bacteria not bullets

  18. Results of the war • Teller Amendment- U.S. would give Cuba its freedom if it overthrew Spanish rule. • Spain looses Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines to the U.S. • US pays $20 million for Philippines • Each new land is ruled in a different manner

  20. Platt Amendment • Limits Cuba’s right to make treaties • US was “parent” • Lease land to US for navy purposes • US would be “protectorate” of Cuba • Cuba signed it; lasted until the Great Depression

  21. Independent Cuba • 1902 U.S. makes Cuba a republic • 1930’s taken over by dictator Batista after U.S. withdraws interest • 1959 Fidel Castro takes over and makes alliance with Communist Russia = hard feelings between the U.S.
