  1. Titanic

  2. Written and directed by James Cameron • Also directed The Abyss and Avatar • Starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack • Most recently in Inception • Starred Kate Winslet as Rose • Most recently in Revolutionary Road • Starred Billy Zane as Cal • Also in Zoolander • Starred Kathy Bates as Molly Brown • Also in The Blind Side • Budget $200 mil., Gross over $600 mil. • Studio wanted Matthew McConaughey

  3. Cameron developed a deep-sea camera system with his brother to shoot real footage of the Titanic. • Could only shoot 12 minutes of film. • Took 12 deep-sea dives to get all the footage. • For some wreck interiors a set was constructed and submerged. • Cameron actually went on some of the dives but got too emotional. • Most décor on ship, carpet to chandeliers, was reconstructed under supervision of the original companies that furnished the actual Titanic. • AFI ranked it as the #83 greatest film in 2007

  4. AFI, in 2008, ranked it as the #6 greatest Epic movie • “I’m the king of the world” – ranks as #4 greatest line by Premiere magazine. • There is only one scene where the FX team didn’t digitally enhance the actor’s cold breath in the air. • First movie to have a budget of $200 mil. • Engine room scenes filmed on the WWII ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien • The davits. Life boats, were made by same company as the real-life ones. • Staircase was not accurate as it was slightly larger than it was in real-life, people were slightly shorter in 1912.

  5. At the departure scene extras were filmed on a green screen in a parking lot. • A model was used for the ship in the poker scene, hence onlookers are missing. • Ocean that extras were jumping into was only 3 ft. deep. • Cameron originally didn’t want any song in the film. Celine Dion’s song went on to win an Oscar. • Scene where a wall of water rushes in, Cameron stopped and said he wanted more water so they had to rebuild the set. • Full size ship was constructed in a tank on a beach in Baja California, Mexico.

  6. Scene where Grand Staircase is destroyed was only done in one shot. • To reduce cost portions of the full size set were built to 90% scale (windows, funnels, etc.) • Set built into the wind to get the smoke flowing right out of the stacks among other things. • The only real decks built were the boat deck and A deck. • Only the starboard side (left side) of the exterior set was built. • Entire set built on hydraulic jacks and could be tilted to 6 degrees intact within the depth of the tank.
