MSC Malaysia - IHL Business Plan Competition 2006. Introduction.

Introduction • Inline with the MSC Malaysia vision to transform Malaysia into a knowledge economy (K-economy), the MSC Malaysia-IHL Business Plan Competition continues to be the nation’s foremost business plan competition that attracts the innovative minds of Malaysia’s new generation.
Background • The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) in alliance with the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Malaysia founded the competition in 2004 under the National Unipreneur Development Programme (NUDP), targeted at the students, researchers, academicians and non-academic personnel.
Objectives • to inculcate a culture of Technopreneurship in Institutions of Higher Learning; • to provide exposure & knowledge of key competencies required in becoming a successful technopreneur; • to encourage students & researchers from diverse backgrounds to share their business ideas, and form teams that leverage on both technology and business competencies; • to identify commercially viable ideas and compelling Intellectual Property (IPs) to be than developed into ICT SMEs.
Progress of Past Winners • The 2005 Business Plan Grand Prize Winner, team Optimal Resource Matrix (ORM) with their winning business plan for resource conservation such as energy, water and heat is doing well in commercialising their product. MIMOS, Shell and Petronas have engaged ORM as their consultant in this subject area and are already using ORM’s solutions.
Progress of Past Winners • The Business Idea Grand Prize Winner, Elan’s Card, had an idea of developing an Internet Prepaid card, similar to the function of a credit card, specifically for teenagers to use for online purchases. This idea has since been adopted by APIIT’s Research & Development (R&D) team to develop into a commercialisable product.
Progress of Past Winners • The 2004 Business Plan Grand Prize Winner and First Runner Up are presently in the progress of commercialising their venture through the support of UTM and TeDD programmes. The Grand Prize Winner, InovaSeer, has since received an R&D grant from CIDB worth RM1.1 million to develop their solution that remotely monitors public infrastructure particularly bridges. InovaSeer is also currently doing pilot projects for JKR.

Competition Categories • The competition is open to all Institutions of Higher Learning in two categories, namely Business Idea and Business Plan.
Business Idea • The Business Idea category is open to all undergraduate students. A Business Idea submission has to demonstrate the commercial viability of the idea but does not require a prototype or product.
Business Plan • The Business Plan category is open to all Postgraduate students, researchers, academic and non-academic personnel. Submission will include a comprehensive Business Plan detailing the commercial viability and preferably coupled with a prototype or product.
