Tundra • Extremely cold climate • Low biotic diversity • Simple vegetation structure • Limitation of drainage • Short season of growth and reproduction • Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material • Large population oscillations
Tundra • extremely short growing season (6 to 10 weeks) • long, cold, dark winters (6 to 10 months with mean monthly temperatures below 32° F or 0° C.) • low precipitation (less than five inches/year) coupled with strong, drying winds. Snowfall is actually advantageous to plant and animal life as it provides an insulating layer on the ground surface.
Tundra • The average temperature of the warmest month is between 50 F (10 C) and 32 F (0 C) • Sometimes as few as 55 days per year have a mean temperature higher than 32 F (0 C) • The average annual temperature is only 10 to 20F (-12C to -6C)
Inches Of Rainfall Per Years • Desert=10 in. • Grassland=30 in. • Rainforest=90 in. • Taiga=30 in. • Temperate Deciduous Forest=60 in. • Tundra=10 in.
