  1. Student Services 2013 Registration Information Session WELCOME

Standard -Basic required curriculum Honors -More reading and writing. -Moves at a faster pace. -Students should have good reading comprehension, and are motivated Course Levels Advanced Placement -AP courses are taught on a college level. -Students should be motivated, and self-disciplined. -AP courses are year long courses on an A/B Day schedule. -AP courses require more effort and homework than standard or honors level courses. -Students are expected to exercises critical thinking skills, utilize problem solving skills, write fluently and absorb masses of content material on a daily basis. -There will be a required summer assignment.

  3. GPA/Quality Points

  4. Class Rank • Schedule for Determining Class Rank shall be run according to the following schedule: Please Note: Class Rank is determined by the Weighted GPA

  5. 4x4 Courses Student attends the course every day for an entire semester. The course concludes at the end of the semester and the final grade is reported on the transcript. A-Day/B-Day Courses Student attends the course every other day for an entire year Students attend one course on A-Day and a different course on B-Day. The course concludes at the end of the school year and the final grade is reported on the transcript. Course Types

  7. English • 4 credits are required: • English I • English II • English III • English IV

  8. Math • 4 credits are required: • Algebra I • Geometry • Algebra II • 4th math aligned with the students high school plans

  9. Social Studies Rising 12th and 11th Graders World History, Civics and Economics, US History, Optional Electives if Desired Rising 10th Graders 9th-World History 10th-Civics and Economics 11th- AP US History and Social Studies Elective or American History I and American History II. Rising 9th Graders 9th-World History or AP World History 10th-AP US History and Social Studies Elective or American History I and American History II 11th-Civics and Economics

  10. Science • 3 credits are required: • An earth/environmental science • -Earth/Environmental Science or AP Environmental Science • Biology • A physical science • -Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Science

  11. Additional Science or Social Studies • Science Examples Include: • AP Environmental • AP Biology II • AP Chemistry II • AP Physics • Oceanography • Social Studies Examples Include: • Psychology • Sociology • AP Psychology • AP Human Geography • AP Government • AP World History • AP Economics • AP European History

  12. Health & Physical Education • 1 Credit of Health & Physical Education is required. • It must be the course titled Health/PE 9.

  13. Electives • 8 Credits are required: • 2 of these additional electives must be any combination of courses in Career & Technical Education, Arts Education, or Second Language • To fulfill requirements for a 4 year college/university 2 of these electives should be a Second Language.

  14. Total Credits Students need a total of 24 Credits to Graduate. Students have the possibility to earn a total of 32 credits over the course of 4 years.

  15. Foreign Language • Spanish I • Spanish II • Spanish III Honors • Spanish IV Honors • Spanish V AP • Spanish I Native Speakers • Spanish II Native Speakers • French I • French II • French III Honors • French IV Honors • French V AP • Things to Consider: • Most Colleges/Universities like to see a foreign language in your senior year.

  16. Visual and Performing Arts Things to consider: • Some Visual Arts courses require a lab fee. • Photography requires a digital camera. • Beginning Guitar requires the student to provide their own acoustic guitar. • Some of the Advanced Level Performing Arts courses require auditions or teacher recommendations. Visual Arts Levels Beginning= Level 1 Intermediate=Level 2 Proficient =Level 3 Advanced=Level 4

CTE Things to consider: • Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses are awarded 2 additional quality points. • In order to participate in DECA, students are required to be enrolled in a Marketing class (Ex. Marketing, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, etc.) • In order to participate in FBLA students are required to be enrolled in a Business course(Ex. Principles of Business, Business Law, Microsoft, etc.) • CTE classes are often limited in size due to the number of computers per class.

  18. Physical Education Things to consider: • A large portion of the grade in a PE course is based on dressing out and participating. • If your student is a student-athlete and prefers PE year long, please register for an A/B day PE course • Fees regarding purchasing a uniform will be discussed at the beginning of the course.

  19. JROTC Things to consider: • Cadets are required to wear a uniform once a week. • Gentlemen must wear their hair above the ear. • Ladies must pull long hair back in to a ponytail. • JROTC emphasizes character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, citizenship, and service to the community. JROTC is not a military recruitment course.

Print the membership form below, complete it, and return to school with your check made payable to Hough High School PTSA. • Parent Assistant -Instructions for obtaining a parent assist log in are on the Student Services wiki.
