  1. Tundra Kelsie Barksdale and Joey Watts

  2. The Tundra… • One of the coldest places in the world!! • The tundra is located at the top of the world, near the North Pole

  3. Abiotic Factors • There is only 25 cm of precipitation each year! • The average temperature is -28°C, but it can reach as low as -70°C • It is extremely cold and • In the summer it is light almost 24 hours a day • In the winter the conditions are opposite • Sometimes the sun doesn’t even rise • Mining and drilling of oil has caused many pollutants in the air

  4. Animals of the Tundra Major predators of the Tundra… • Polar Bear • Wolves • Artic fox

  5. Animals of the Tundra Prey and smaller animals… • Snowshoe rabbits • Lemmings

  6. Plants of the Tundra • Arctic Moss- it is a producer. Moss covers the ground and warms, which allows other plants to grow also. • Diamond-leaf Willow- it provides food for the grazing animals in the tundra.

  7. Plants of the Tundra Producers Labrador Tea Pasque Flower Bearberry

  8. Biotic Factors • Producers grow close to the ground to avoid the strong wind • They have short life cycles because the growing season is very short • Consumers change color with the season to stay hidden from predators • They have thick fur for warmth in the cold climate • Migration is very common for a lot of the animals

  9. Plant Adaptations to the Tundra • Perennials • Heat Efficient • Protective Covering • Nutrition • Evolution for Survival

  10. Animal Adaptations to the Tundra • Warm winter coats • Heat-efficient body shape • Growth and reproduction • Camouflage • Hibernation • Snow as insulation

  11. Competition • Competition in the Tundra is highest in the summer because of lack of food • Millions of migrated birds come to eat the food • The polar bears and some other animals have a hard time surviving in the summer because the ice melts and they can’t find food • The wolves, foxes, and penguins barely survive the winter and are starving when summer arrives • The competition for food is fierce at all times!

  12. Human Impact • Development is starting to become a problem • Airborne pollutants are becoming a threat • The biggest threats are definitely gas and oil development • Hunting and killing of organisms is hurting the population of the biome

  13. Usefulness of the Tundra • Lumber • Plants • Oil
