  5. Liechtenstein- 160 sq km  • The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719; it became a sovereign state in 1806. • Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral), the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth. • Loose banking regulations have resulted in concerns about money laundering.

  6. Largest by Area • Russia- 17,075,200 sq km • Repeated defeats of the Russian army in World War I led to widespread rioting in the major cities of the Russian Empire and to the overthrow in 1917 of the royal family. The Communists under Vladimir LENIN seized power soon after and formed the USSR. The brutal rule of Josef STALIN (1928-53) strengthened Russian dominance of the Soviet Union at a cost of tens of millions of lives.

  9. China 9,596,960 sq km • For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, • In the 19th and early 20th centuries, China dealt with civil unrest, famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. • After World War II, the Chinese Communists under Mao Zedong established a Communist system that, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. • After 1978, Mao's successor Deng Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled in China. • For much of the Chinese population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.
