  3. Chambers of the heart • The heart has four chambers or parts. These are called: Right atrium Left atrium Left ventricle Right ventricle

  4. Blood Vessels • Veins are tubes which bring blood withoutoxygeninto the heart. • Arteries are tubes which take blood with oxygenaway from the heart and bring it all around the body. • Together they are called blood vessels.

  5. How the Heart Works • Blood without oxygen comes into the heart through a vein. • It goes into the first chamber called the right atrium. • It then goes through an opening called a valve into the right ventricle. • From there it is pumped to the lungs to collect some oxygen.

  6. Going into the Heart Blood without oxygen Off to the lungs we go! 3 1 2

  7. How the Heart Works • Blood with oxygen comes back to the heart from the lungs. • It goes into the left atrium. • It then goes through an opening called a valve into the left ventricle. • From there it is pumped away from the heart and all around the body through a very special artery called the aorta.

  8. Coming out of the Heart 3 1 Back from the lungs 2

  10. Experiment Time!

  11. Finding our Pulse! • Put your left hand out. • Put out your middle and pointing finger on the right hand. • Place them on your left wrist below your thumb and search for a beat. This is your pulse. • The pulse tells us how quickly the heart is pumping blood around the body. • It should beat about 70 times every minute.

  12. Finding our Pulse! • COUNT HOW MANY TIMES YOU FEEL YOUR PULSE BEAT IN ONE MINUTE. • Record your answer. My pulse is _____ per minute.

  13. Finding our Pulse! • Jog on the spot for one minute. • Now count how many times you feel your pulse beat in one minute. • Record your answer. When I ran for 1 minute my pulse was _____ per minute. What happened to your pulse when you ran for one minute? Why do you think this happened?

  14. Finding our Pulse! • Do jumping jacks for one minute. • Now count how many times you feel your pulse beat in one minute. • Record your answer. When I did jumping jacks for 1 minute my pulse was_______________ per minute. What happened to your pulse when you did jumping jacks for one minute? Why do you think this happened?
