  2. Blood Flow

  3. Click me!!!

  4. Superior Vena Cava The superior vena cava is a vien that carries de-oxygenated blood from the upper half of the body to the heart's right atrium.

  5. Inferior vena cava The inferior vena cava carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the heart

  6. Right atrium The right atrium receives de-oxygenated blood from the body and pumps it into the right ventricle

  7. Right ventricle The right ventricle receives the de-oxygenated blood from the right atrium and pump it into the pulmonary artery

  8. Pulmonary artery • Carries de-oxygenated blood from the heart to the lung

  9. Pulmonary vein • The pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.

  10. Left atrium The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins to the left ventricle.

  11. Left ventricle • The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium and pumps it into the aorta.

  12. aorta • The aorta brings oxygenated blood to all parts of the human body

  13. Tricuspid valve • The tricuspid valve is between the right atrium and right ventricle

  14. Aortic valve • The aortic valve is between the left ventricle and the aortic in a human heart.

  15. Mitral valve • This valve lies between the left atrium and the left ventricla.

  16. Septum • The septum of the heart is a wall that separates the right and left sides of the heart.

  17. heart muscle Skeleton Muscle • The cardiac muscle( a.k.a. the heart muscle) is a cross between skeleton muscle and smooth muscle. It’s function is to pump blood. Heart Muscle A single heart muscle cell working Smooth Muscle

  18. MRI • MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which is a non-invasive way to examine images of thing inside an object. MRI of a Heart MRI Machine

  19. CT • Computer tomography (a.k.a. CAT scan) uses x-ray to take images of the internals of an object CT Machine Heart CT Scan

  20. Nuclear Medicine Scan • Nuclear medicine scans are images that are taken using nuclear properties. Nuclear Medicine scans

  21. Sonography • Ultrasound scans uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs.

  22. Blood Circulation

  23. Map of the Human Heart Oxygen-poor blood (shown in blue) flows from the body into the right atrium Blood flows through the right atrium into the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs, where the blood releases waste gases and picks up oxygen. The newly oxygen-rich blood (shown in red) returns to the heart and enters the left atrium. Blood flows through the left atrium into the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body. Form: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/heart/heartmap.html

  24. Interesting Facts • Put your hand on your heart. Did you place your hand on the left side of your chest? Many people do, but the heart is actually located almost in the center of the chest, between the lungs. It's tipped slightly so that a part of it sticks out and taps against the left side of the chest, which is what makes it seem as though it is located there. • Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a kid, your heart is about the same size as your fist, and if you're an adult, it's about the same size as two fists. • Give a tennis ball a good, hard squeeze. You're using about the same amount of force your heart uses to pump blood out to the body. Even at rest, the muscles of the heart work hard--twice as hard as the leg muscles of a person sprinting.

  25. More… • Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times. • The aorta, the largest artery in the body, is almost the diameter of a garden hose. Capillaries, on the other hand, are so small that it takes ten of them to equal the thickness of a human hair. • Your body has about 5.6 liters (6 quarts) of blood. This 5.6 liters of blood circulates through the body three times every minute. In one day, the blood travels a total of 19,000 km (12,000 miles)--that's four times the distance across the US from coast to coast. • The heart pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during an average lifetime--that's enough to fill more than 3 super tankers.
