  1. The Human Heart Lubb-Dubb

  2. The Heart • Made of muscle tissue • Heart wall is made of cardiac muscle • Contains pacemaker • Contains nervous tissue responding to stimuli (leading to increase or decrease in heart rate) • Protection of heart • Ribs, sternum, spine • Contains 4 chambers, separated by septum • Right and left atria • Receiving chambers • Right and left ventricles • Delivery chambers

  3. Double Circulation System

  4. The Human Heart

  5. Path of Blood Through the Human Heart • There are three main systems or “cycles” that involve getting blood through the heart to the other parts of the body and back: • Pulmonary System • Supplies the lungs (poumon = lungs in French) • Low-pressure system • Systemic System • Supplies the body • High-pressure system • Cardiac System • Supplies the heart

  6. Pulmonary System deoxygenated blood oxygenated blood • PULMONARY SYSTEM(supplies lungs) • R atrium • R ventricle • pulmonary arteries* (*only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood) • arteries, arterioles • capillaries • venules, veins • pulmonary veins* (*only veins that carry O2-rich blood) • L atrium

  7. Systemic System deoxygenated blood oxygenated blood • SYSTEMIC SYSTEM (suppies body cells, except heart) • L atrium • L ventricle • aorta • arteries, arterioles • capillaries • venules, veins • superior & inferior vena cava • R atrium • NOTE: BLOOD IS NOW BACK TO WHERE IT “STARTED”.

  8. Cardiac System deoxygenated blood oxygenated blood • CARDIAC SYSTEM (supplies heart) • L ventricle • aorta • coronary arteries • coronary/cardiac veins • R atrium

  9. Cardiac System – Coronary Arteries

  10. Practice!!  • Miss S. will explain everything.

  11. The Sounds of the Heart • Anyone remember what Bill Nye said the sounds the heart makes are?? • “LUBB” • Louder, longer sound • Made by the closing of AV valves and opening of semi-lunar valves • Occurs at the beginning of systole • Ventricles contract, forcing blood out • “DUBB” • Quieter, shorter sound • Made by closing of semi-lunar valves and opening of AV valves • Occurs at the beginning of diastole • Ventricles relax, allowing blood in

  12. Investigation • You will be put into partners to complete the investigation activity on heart sounds. • Answer all questions on the paper provided. • When we are finished (in about 10 minutes), we will take up the answers together. • Miss S. will collect the papers and record the marks.

  13. Hand Back Day  • Quizzes • Soil Erosion Assignments • Marks Showing  • Test  Anatomy  June 14th or June 15th (Monday or Tuesday) • Review will be the day before • When it is will depend on how long the dissection takes
