Leaders of the Tang Dynasty • Tang Dynasty- • Li Yuan, also called Emperor Gaozu, was the founder and first emperor. • Li Shimin, also called Taizong, was the son of Li Yuan. He expanded the empire and was viscous. (Killed his own brothers) Built a new legal code. • Li Zhu, also known as Emperor Aidi. Ascended throne at age 13. Li Yuan Li Shimin
Achievements • Tang Dynasty • Peak of civilization and center of trade in the East. • Study of Medicine, used herbs and organic material. • Gun Powder • Gas cylinders and air conditioning. • Study of Law and Math • Wood-Block Printing developed into paper.
Notable Events • Tang Dynasty • Equal Field System- a movement to distribute land evenly. • The An Lushan Revolt (755-763): major revolt that weakened the Tang army and dynasty greatly. Lasted through the rein of 3 emperors • The Huang Chao Rebellion (874-884): decade long rebellion led by Huang Chao that led to the dynasty’s downfall.
Contact with other Cultures • Tang Dynasty: • Japan-exchanged culture, politics, education and language • Xinluo- Tang presented silk, porcelain, Chinese tea, and engraving typography. Xinluo provided medicine materials, handcrafted items, Korean ginseng and Korean music • Persia and Dashi- introduced dates and spinach to China. Learned Chinese culture. Some were picked for government positions
Leaders of the Song Dynasty • Emperor Taizu • Founded the Dynasty, began the reunification of China. • Emperor Yingzong • Fifth emperor of China. Reigned from 1063- 1067. Name means “ Outstandingly talented ancestor. • Song Weiwang • Was only seven when he became emperor and died at the age of eight. Name means “Lord Perpetual Nation
Achievements • Song Dynasty • Wang Anshi created a low-interest loan for farmers and merchants • Compass • Movable-type printing • Abacus (calculator) • Paper money. • Silk, textile, and porcelain making industries • Calendar
Notable Events • Song Dynasty • Were the first to create government issued paper-printed money • First permanent standing navy established in 1132 • Chinese use explosives in war for the first time • Battle of Yamen (1279): Song are defeated by the Mongolians, ending the dynasty’s rule.
Contact with other cultures • Song Dynasty: • Goryeo- traded gold, silver, copper, ginseng, pine nuts, paper, brushes, ink, fans, etc. for silk, books, porcelain, medicines, spices, and musical instruments. • Muslims- traded and appointed to supervise economic affairs
