  1. The African Network A presentation by Annemarie Meijer , East African Manager

  2. The African Network Objectives To create the means by which African broadcasters can easily, and efficiently exchange news material on a daily basis. To form a strong network that allows broadcasters to enhance the service they provide to their audience by sharing news material. To promote a more balanced picture of Africa than that seen on international channels by focusing on more than just the negative aspects such as wars and disasters. 25-Aug-14 3

  3. The African Network Background • Broadcasters combining resources to widen their coverage is not a new concept • Organisations like the European Broadcasting Union have been in existence since the late 1950s. This organisation now has 75 member broadcasters in some 56 countries. • Historically News Agencies were set up by Broadcasters to allow them to cover stories they could not or did not want to cover individually. • The ability to share or network stories dramatically reduces the cost of that content • At the moment many Africans learn more about their wider continent from foreign (CNN, BBC, Aljazeera etc) broadcasters than they do from their own local channels. • African broadcasters produce quality content they just don’t have the means to share it among one another due to a lack of the technical means to send and receive video material in a reliable manner. • High costs have been a major barrier

  4. The African Network Purpose Using advanced technology, The African Network has developed a method of transmitting a news clip from one broadcaster to many that is affordable and as simple as sending an email. This will enable member broadcasters to simultaneously send a story they have produced to all the other members. In addition to the daily exchange of news material the service can develop further: The African Network can package content for weekly and monthly round ups. The network can ensure that there is sufficient archive material that could be made available for distribution to its members and other broadcasters Sell material to foreign broadcasters on behalf of its members 25-Aug-14 5

  5. The African Network Market Advantages A broadcaster can expand its news coverage of the African continent A broadcaster can show its viewers Africans reporting on Africa A broadcaster can give its viewers a more balanced view of Africa rather than just the ‘parachute reporting’ of wars and disasters. A broadcaster can Assist Africans to develop a sense of unity and common purpose by learning more about each others countries Broadcasters can work together to reduce costs of news gathering Broadcasters can build relationships with other broadcasters. 25-Aug-14 6

  6. The African Network Technology Solution The delivery method is over the Internet All broadcasters require is a computer with internet connectivity of at least 128/128Kbps ( Committed information Rate ) Due to the lack of bandwidth The African network is offering fully licensed and installed VSAT terminals to offer the necessary Internet connectivity, where the required internet bandwidth is not locally available. This is combined with Globe Cast's award winning Content Exchange programme which is the key to enabling the simple cost effective transfer of video files. 25-Aug-14 7

  7. The African Network Technology Solution cont. The complete solution at each broadcaster will consist of: A 2.4m 10W system C-Band terminal Customs clearance Terminal installation Vast license Bandwidth of 128/128 kbps CIR Content Exchange programme 25-Aug-14 8
