  1. Lawrence Reflecting the community, YouthBuild Lawrence serves a 90% Latino population between the ages of 18 and 24. The program has graduated more than140 young people and helped more than 90 earn their GED. YouthBuild Lawrence developed the unique concept of a YouthBuild Carpentry Challenge as a competition to improve and recognize the construction skills of YouthBuild trainees. Sponsored by the Home Depot, the annual event now attracts YouthBuild teams from all over New England that compete to build a quality structure in the fastest time possible. In addition, the program has been designated a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) by the city, works with the Greater Lawrence Habitat for Humanity to construct 18 units of housing and has owned, developed, constructed and sold four units of housing constructed by the program’s students. Initiated in March 1996, YouthBuild Lawrence completed its eighth program cycle in the summer 2004. As a program of the Lawrence Family Development and Education Fund Inc., YouthBuild Lawrence is one component of a comprehensive community development strategy engaging residents in citizenship, service, K-8 education, and leadership development. The program’s noteworthy relationship with Bread and Roses Housing Trust will keep housing developed by YouthBuild Lawrence affordable forever, as opposed to traditional five years to 20 year requirements.
