  7. BDM: 202.2.4 Supplemental Site Plan • This plans shows information necessary for the determination of slope lines, probable property requirements, sight distance, and other items involved in determining the type of separation.

  8. BDM - 301.4.2 Railroad Bridges • Bridges are to be designed in accordance with current AREMA specifications and the individual railway company’s loading requirements. All other aspects of the structure design shall conform to AASHTO.

  9. BDM – 602.3 FOR RAILWAY PROJECTS • For structures carrying railroad traffic, provide the following notes on the project plans: • [9] DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS • [10] DESIGN DATA • [10M] DESIGN DATA

  10. BDM – 608 Railroad Grade Separation Projects • 608.1 Construction Clearances [39] Maintain a construction clearance of 13 feet [meters] horizontally from the center of tracks and 22 feet [meters] vertically from a point level with the top of rail. • Design Clearances – are 18 feet horizontally from the center of tracks and 23 feet vertically from top of rail.

  11. DEALING WITH EXISTING SUBSTANDARD CLEARANCES

  12. BDM – 608 Railroad Grade Separation Projects • 608.2 Railroad Aerial Lines • [40] Railroad aerial lines will be relocated by the Railroad.

  13. Railroad’s RequirementsClearances/Crashwalls • Clearances – Horizontal clearance 18 feet from the centerline of track to the face of the pier or abutment. Vertical clearance of 23feet from the top of rail. • Crashwalls – AREMA specifications, Chapter 8, Article 2.1.5 covers requirements. Crashwalls are required when face of the pier is closer than 25 feet from the center line of the track.

  14. Railroad’s RequirementsDrainage • Drainage from the bridge shall be preferable collected with drain pipes and drained away from the railroad right of way. When open scuppers are provided on the bridge, none shall be closer than 25 feet of the centerline of track. Flow from scuppers shall be directed away from the railroad drainage ditches.

  15. Railroad’s RequirementsStructure Excavation and Shoring • Shoring protection shall be provided when excavating adjacent to an active railroad track, except as noted below: 1) Excavation does not encroach upon a 1 ½ horizontal: 1 vertical theoretical slope line starting 1foot 6 inches below top of rail and at 12 feet minimum from centerline of track. 2) Track is on level ground or in a cut section and on stable soil. (see railroad design manual)

  16. Railroad’s RequirementsGeneral • Railroad Valuation Station and the distance from the nearest mile post at the intersection of the centerline of the track and the centerline of the bridge shall be shown on the plans. • Horizontal and vertical clearances shall be clearly marked. • At least one subsurface exploration boring for each substructure unit adjacent to the track shall be furnished. (see railroad design manual)

  17. Railroad’s RequirementsDemolition of Existing Structure • Railroad tracks shall be protected from damage during demolition of existing structure or replacement of deck slab. Either method may be used: 1) a protection shield shall be erected over the track to catch falling debris 2) track may be protected by timber mats placed over the track structure (see railroad design manual)

  18. Railroad’s RequirementsErection Procedure • The contractor shall submit a detailed procedure for erecting the spans over the railroad tracks. The procedure shall indicate the capacity of the cranes, location of the cranes with respect to the tracks and estimated lifting loads. The procedure must be approved by the railroad

  19. General Railroad Information • Review time – the railroads usually require at least 2 months per each review • Railroad’s require as built plans • When performing work on railroad right of way before the project is awarded the consultant will need to obtain a right of entry (contact CO rail coordinator) • Flaggers maybe required when work is being performed in railroad right of way and within 25 feet of the railroad tracks

  20. For more information • Please feel free to contact any district rail coordinator or central office rail coordinator • Norfolk Southern’s design manual is available via the web at www.nscorp.com/nscorp/index • CSX Transportation design manual is available by contacting CO rail coordinator • ODOT’s bridge design manual is online

  21. Thank You

  22. NARRATIVE OF BRIDGE ALTERNATIVESThe Structure Type Study shall include a brief narrative identifying the structure alternatives and their costs. The narrative should provide insight into why the particular proposed structure was chosen. Factors that need to be considered in selecting a structure for a particular site include geometry, economics, maintainability, constructability, right-of-way constraints, disruption to the traveling public, waterway crossing requirements or grade separations requirements, clearances for railway and highway crossings, foundation considerations, historical and environmental concerns, debris and ice flow problems and appearance.

  23. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS • For Railway-Highway grade separation structures, a Supplemental Site Plan is required. The Supplemental Site Plan should be completed and submitted with the Final Site Plan (STEP 8). The reproduced tracing of this plan should have the title block deleted so that the railroad can use the plan to show force account work necessary to complete the highway project.

  24. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS • This plan shall show information necessary for the determination of slope lines, probable property requirements, sight distance and other items involved in determining the type of separation.

  25. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS A. A 1” = 100’ [1 to 1000] scale plan of the alignment of the railroad and the highway extended at least 1000 feet each way from the proposed point of intersection, taken from actual surveys. B. Profile of top of rails of all railroads, extending at least 1000 feet each way from the proposed intersection.

  26. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS C. Sufficient cross sections along the railroad and highway to determine approximate earthwork limits and encroachment on railroad property.

  27. IDENTIFY ALL RAILWAY OBJECTS

  28. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS D. In case a highway underpass type of separation is at all possible, the submitted information should show the line and profile of the nearest or best outlet for drainage. E. Intersection angle between highway centerline and railroad centerline. F. Highway stationing and railroad mile post stationing at intersection. G. Railroad right-of-way lines.

  29. 202.2.4 SUPPLEMENTAL SITE PLAN FOR RAILWAY CROSSINGS H. Railroad pole lines, signal control boxes, communications relay houses, signal standards and drainage structures. I. Centerlines of all tracks and location of switch points. J. Location of buildings or other structures within the railroad right-of-way. K. Railroad traffic counts including type of movements and speed. L. Location of all utilities occupying railroad right-of-way and the names of the owners of these utilities.

  33. 608 RAILROAD GRADE SEPARATION PROJECTS608.1 CONSTRUCTION CLEARANCEObtain the actual dimensions used in the text of this note from the "Agreement" (a legal document signed by the Director and Railroad). To help limit project construction problems, validate those dimensions with the district railroad coordinator before the note is considered complete. Revise the note to define the agreed upon restraints, including items such as short term clearances, if different than the construction clearances; maximum period of time for restricted clearances; or other project specific controls.

  34. 608 RAILROAD GRADE SEPARATION PROJECTSSECTION 600 TYPICAL GENERAL NOTES[39] CONSTRUCTION CLEARANCE: Maintain a construction clearance of * feet horizontally from the center of tracks and * feet [meters] vertically from a point level with the top of the higher rail, and * feet [meters] from the center of tracks, at all times. * The Designer shall fill in the dimensions.

  35. 608 RAILROAD GRADE SEPARATION PROJECTS608.2 RAILROAD AERIAL LINESModify the note below to match the specific requirements of the "Agreement" (a legal document signed by the Director and Railroad). Contact the District railroad coordinator to confirm whether the railroad will move, maintain, or re-construction their lines or other cable systems attached to the bridge or whether the note must specify this scope of work as part of the project.[40] RAILROAD AERIAL LINES will be relocated by the Railroad. Use all precautionsnecessary to see that the lines are not disturbed during the construction stage and cooperate with the Railroad in the relocation of these lines. The cost of the relocation will be included in the railroad force account work.

  36. 608 RAILROAD GRADE SEPARATION PROJECTS609 UTILITY LINESUtilities shall be coordinated by the District Utility Coordinator. The District utilities coordinator shall be contacted for required notes. If existing utilities contain asbestos, or other hazardous materials, plan notes will be required to define what material, what utility line and where located. Designer shall assure any plan notes added are coordinated with the bid item descriptions to assure the Contractor properly bids the item. The following note should be used only if utilities are involved and as modified by the district utilities coordinator.[41] UTILITY LINES: The Utilitiy(ies) shall bore all expense involved in relocating (installing) the affected utility lines. The Contractor and Utility(ies) are to cooperate by arranging their work in such a manner that inconvenience to either will be held to a minimum.”
