The Alphabet • The Romans adopted the alphabet from the Etruscans • The alphabet is used in many different languages, Latin, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese • The Roman numeric system uses The Latin alphabet to signify values
Theater • Theater was a popular form of entertainment in ancient Rome • Theaters were built in the shape of the letter D, With awnings protected people from the sun • People would spend all day watching dramas, comedies and mimes. • For Music recitals and poetry readings they would go into smaller theaters called odeums
Poetry • The Roman poet Virgil composed massive epics such as Adenoid • Famous Roman poets are, Lucretius, Catullus, Horace, Ovid and Martial • Roman poetry borrowed the style of the Greeks
Music • Music was customary at funerals, and the Tiba • The kithara, is like the guitar of ancient Rome, it was played in both popular and serious music • The music of ancient Rome was a part of Roman culture from earliest times
sculptures • Sculpture was considered the highest form of art by Romans. • The study of ancient Roman sculpture is complicated because of its relation to Greek sculpture. • Many examples of even the most famous Greek sculptures, are known only from Roman Imperial or Hellenistic "copies." • The strengths of Roman sculpture are in portraiture, ,they were less concerned with the ideal than the Greeks or Egyptians, and produced many very characterful works, and in narrative relief scenes.
painting • The Romans painted directly on the walls of their rooms, and also on portable panels. • wall paintings, we can even see imitations of portable paintings , these are paintings of paintings. Domestic interiors were claustrophobic, windowless and dark, so the Romans used paintings as decoration to visually open up and lighten their living spaces. • A wall would be prepared with the application of 1-3 coats of mortar (lime and sand) followed with 1-3 coats of lime mixed with powdered marble, colored pigments were applied while the wall was still damp. Sometimes tempera and liquid wax were added after the wall had dried.
